Palmer Lutheran Health Center is fortunate to have an auxiliary and volunteers to assist us in enhancing our patient care.
Volunteers
Palmer Lutheran Health Center has a variety of opportunities for volunteers:
- Inpatient Volunteers distribute reading materials, juice, and often just visit with patients mid-morning and mid-afternoon.
- Outpatient Volunteers provide assistance for specialist clinics.
- Hospice Volunteers assist hospice caregivers with much needed respite time.
- Volunteer Drivers transport tests/specimens from our Laboratory to area clinics.
Volunteers are special people to our patients and staff; we host an annual appreciate luncheon as a “thank you” for all they do. Volunteers can give of their time once a week or more, or as often as their schedule permits. If you are interested in joining this dynamic group, please contact Palmer Lutheran Health Center at 563-422-3811 for more information.
Hospital Auxiliary
The Hospital Auxiliary was formed on March 25 in 1939 for the purpose of promoting and advancing the welfare of Palmer Lutheran Health Center. The Auxilians have four units:
Eastside Unit: Makes activity kits for pediatric patients, and cut and sew rags for rag rugs. Fundraising Projects: sale of rag rugs and Tasting Bee. Meetings are the second Monday evening of the month at the hospital.
Fayette Unit: Provides puppets for activity kits for pediatric patients, sew nursing gowns for the OB Department, sew christening baby bonnets for the gift cases, and donate other craft items for the gift cases. Fundraising Projects: card marathons and other events. Meetings are the fourth Wednesday evening of the month.
Sunnyside Unit: Purchases dolls or stuffed animals for pediatric patients. Fundraising Project: play cards (500) after each meeting. Meetings are the second Monday evening of the month at the hospital.
Cradle Unit (honorary): No meetings; assist in Fundraising Projects.
These units have elected officers and work individually on projects and activities, and together form one general organization. The general Auxiliary Board meets at the hospital the first Tuesday of each month except for one month during the summer.
Together the Auxilians assist the hospital and community with the following activities and projects:
- Blood Drives – serve as coordinator since 1993; the drives are held every other month on the first Wednesday.
- Christmas Trees - decorate two for the hospital and provide new decorations when needed.
- Garden Walk – host walks through local gardens on the last Sunday in June.
- Gift Cases – manage one near the main entrance and one by the outpatient entrance.
- National Hospital Week - provide 6 dozen cookies each day for hospital staff.
- National Volunteer Week - provide gifts for hospital volunteers.
- Palmer Lutheran Health Center’s Annual Walk/Run - provide 12 dozen cookies.
- PSAS Annual Craft Show – furnish workers and food for the lunch stand since 1994; 80% of the profit is kept for projects and 20% is given to PSAS.
- Scholarships – award two Dollars for Scholars scholarships to high school graduating seniors who plan to continue their education in a health-related field.
Recent purchases for the hospital from project funds have been room divider curtains, one set of automatic doors for the south entrance of the hospital, oncology room furnishings, Christmas stockings and baby bibs for newborns. Many others have been purchased throughout the years.
If you would like to meet new friends and have fun while doing rewarding and satisfying volunteer work, we invite you to join our organization. For more information contact the hospital at 563-422-3811.
