Recent Meningitis Outbreak NOT a Concern at Palmer

Recent meningitis outbreak NOT a concern at Palmer

In recent news, a nationwide outbreak of fungal meningitis related to steroids has been reported. Palmer Lutheran does NOT use any products involved in this outbreak and our patients can feel comfortable knowing any steroid injection received does not contain the contaminated product.

"Palmer does not use the steroid Depomedrol in our pain clinic and never have. Presently, Depomedrol contains a preservative that could cause harm if injected into the spinal space. Therefore, certain impacted facilities had the steroid preparation compounded to remove the preservative. At this time, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) has not identified any facilities in Iowa as using this compounded preparation." Palmer’s Surgery Department, Keith Barnhill, CRNA/ARNP
